In the book “To kill a Mockingbird”, courage is a characteristic that is shown by different characters. However, courage is shown in an indirect way. Courage, in my definition and understanding, is the bravery and confidence in doing something despite the consequence. In TKAM, Harper Lee showed the characteristic by having the characters do things that are right or risky.
In TKAM, an example that can show courage is Atticus. As the father of Scout, when Scout refused to go to school because of her misfortune, he explained to her that she can never understand others unless she sees things in other’s perspectives. He showed courage by telling her to do the right thing. Atticus’s action showed that his parenting does not value knowledge as much as morality. Atticus wants his children to be nobler. Other examples are Scout and Jem. Early in the chapters, Boo Radley was described as someone creepy and scary, but Scout and Jem still had the courage to play the Boo Radley game and Jem even had the courage to touch Radley’s house. This showed courage because they tried something that is risky and didn’t fear the result.
