K12 Journalism Writing
Introduction: This is an assignment for my online Journalism class and it is the Journalism Final Project. The assignment is to write a news article about a recent event by a non-profit organization that is trying to make a difference in homelessness, joblessness, orphan child etc. It was done on the day January 25th in 2013.
Reflection: I think the hardest part was to find an article that fits the assignment because there was no recent non profit events during that time and if I write about a event that happens long time ago, then the story loses it's news value.
Something I did well on this assignment is having no bias, no grammar mistakes and perfectly describe about the event. This is the only project that I got a full mark for in my journalism course so there is pretty much I want to do different about if I had to do this assignment again. But maybe I can make in better by getting more with the details and be more specific.
I learned how to write a news article in the proper format in this assignment and how to keep my bias out of the news article. I learned a lot more into how to write a news article like a professional journalist.

Giving Children A Chance
Shanghai Healing House provides medical care and treatment for local Chinese orphans

The 22nd of January was the day when the Shanghai Healing House had organized a car wash outside of Shanghai Plant Park to raise money in order to sponsor 2 of the babies that had arrived at SHH, Zhao Zi Jin and Chen Qian Li.
Shanghai Healing House had organized many events to raise money to support local Chinese orphans with severe cleft conditions, also giving them medical treatment and care to cure them from their congenital conditions so that they can have a chance to live with proper support. On the 22nd of January, many cars had pulled into the driveway outside of Shanghai Plant Park. The Healing House set the fee of the car wash at 5 to 10 RMB, depending on how much work needed to be put into cleaning the car.
“This is surely fun! Doing this for those kids makes my heart feel really warm.” said Jenny Kim, one of the members working for the Shanghai Healing House. Over the afternoon, over 100 cars pulled in for a wash, some of the services included: - waxing, carpet vacuuming, soap water washing and wheel rubbing. “This is better than those car washes I go to in parking lots. My car gets so much cleaner, and it’s half the price! Knowing that they are doing this for helping orphans makes me want to give them double the price,” said a driver who drove a VW van. The event went on for hours, and all the people have worked very hard on washing the car. Several customers wanted to pay more to donate the money. There were several people who even wanted to help with the work. Every member of the Healing House greeted the customers with a smile, and they also give them a key chain as a gift for coming to the car wash. The work the people have done raised a total of 1785 RMB (275 USD).
Shanghai Healing House, and many other medical organizations have partnered together to work on helping the babies with severe cleft conditions. It started out in 2009 by Jamie and Christina Weidner, when they partnered with the Chinese Children Welfare Institution; they have been working hard to meet the children’s needs. “It has been my wife’s and my ambition for many years to do what we can to give babies a chance at life. You can say it is a calling upon our lives. With four beautiful children of our own and having been given so much in life, this small way of giving back is the least we can do,” says Jamie. “For us this is a passion that we have committed ourselves to for a lifetime. It is our desire that our children and families throughout Shanghai will continue to take part in this worthy cause."
While supporting around 25 babies at a time, the Shanghai Healing House had provide care for pre-surgery, coordination, support during surgery, and post-surgery. The babies with certain deformity have different habits in eating. Some babies are born with illness and need more of a treatment than the others.
Shanghai Healing House has organized several events such as charity and other services of fundraising for the babies. The babies were taken care of very well by the volunteered nurses and the caretakers working for SHH. “The thing that first struck me when I became involved in the Healing Home was you were able to make a real difference, and sometimes in the crazy life of Shanghai to do something 'real' is very important,” says Sarah Vasey, SHH Volunteer Coordinator. “Being able to get to know the children has been such an honor, and to watch them grow and come from what is a pretty unfair start in life to being joined with loving families that so desperately want them in their lives is amazing. What is also great from a volunteer perspective is that there are so many ways to get involved that can suit almost everyone.” Babies can be sponsored; the sponsorship totally covers several costs such as the daily care, food supplies and medical supplies.
Over 200,000 babies around the world are born with severe cleft conditions and this has created a great challenge in the development of medical sections. SHH’s mission is to give Chinese orphans with such conditions the biggest medical, social, and emotional support during their infancy. The babies live in the house, where they have people taking care of them and teach them things.
The car wash had earned 1785 RMB, but that was far from enough to support the children to go through infancy, which is 3 years, as helping one child require more than 50000RMB. Money is spend mainly on surgery, food and medical supplies, this section requires more than 4/5 of the money to be used to support an infant with deformity and other costs are on the healing house, painting, toys, furniture etc. The organizer of this car wash said “This is just one of the few small events we do because it’s fun. Every child is a country flower so we will do everything we can to help the children who had an unfair start for their life. We will be organizing greater events in the future to raise more money. Hopefully those children will shine and become productive person in the world.”
