The Self-Made man is a statue of a man carving himself. In the photo, the man held the hammer in the air, his lower body is part of a huge stone, and I can tell that he is attempting to carve his rest of the body, thus making himself.
The hammer represents work, and the man's strong muscle emphasized what it represents, the stone represents the work that are not done, and the statue represents that you have to work to make something.
This statue represents the idea of the American dream, the idea of how everybody has the ability and opportunity of achieving anything one can achieve with what one is best capable of doing, and in the statue the man is carving himself, his opportunity to achieve his whole figure, and he is capable of carving so he has the opportunity in making himself whole.
