Act 2
In Act 2 of The Death of a Salesman, we knew more about Willy Loman and his relationship with Biff. In this act, Biff wanted to leave the house, to leave his dad alone and not come back. Biff wanted to leave because he came to the realization that he being unsuccessful is causing pain to his father so he wanted to leave so that his dad won’t think of him as much as he does now.
However, Willy did not understand why Biff wants to leave. Willy thinks that Biff is leaving the house to spite him. Biff did not become the successful man Willy wanted him to become, and for that Willy thinks that Biff is getting back at him for spite.
Biff thinks that he is unsuccessful because of his dad. In the scene, Biff got into a fight with Willy, and he told everyone the truth, about how he stole himself out of every good job he got. He said that it was his father’s education that caused him to become somebody Biff doesn’t want to be. Biff learned that he is not going to become successful and that he is not going to bring home any prizes. Biff also confronted Willy about how he is thinking about killing himself, and he begged him to give up his unrealistic American Dream because it is killing him. Billy also asked Willy to allow him to leave so he doesn’t have to be a constant reminder to Willy of how his son isn’t successful.
Willy realized that his son loves him and thinks that he is going to be a successful man; however, what Biff is trying to make his dad realize is that he is never going to be successful. Willy thinks that if Biff have 20 thousand dollars in his hand, then he can start a business and become successful, and this lead him to kill himself for the money.
The Funeral Scene
Willy believed that many people will appear on his funeral because he is well known. However, the only people who came to his funeral were his family and his neighbor. It was therefore a very tragic thing.
During the funeral, Charlie said something about being a salesman. It is not like being a doctor or a lawyer or somebody that repairs your bolts. A salesman got to have big dreams and have great imaginations.
However, Biff believed that his dad had the wrong dream. I think part of it is right. Because of Willy persistence of becoming somebody well liked, he didn’t care about his family and didn’t care even when Biff was going to flunk math because his son is well liked in school. If he had been more realistic, and worked for better things in life instead of being the well known guy, he wouldn’t end up the way he did.
